Our Story

Located in the Northern part of Malawi in the district of Karonga, the Music Centre of Lusubilo provides free music lessons to young men and women who have the desire to pursue music as a career.

With the motto “Give thanks and glory to God and make people happy” the institution started in 2012 after the retired Korean Opera singer and a Music Professor at Korean National University of Arts, Prof. Agnes Chungja Kim visited Malawi and Karonga in particular and felt the great need to support the young ones whose passion and desire was to pursue music as a career.

As a young girl from a poor family background, Prof. Agnes Chungja Kim could not afford the education she received in Germany. Therefore, as a way of showing appreciation to God and the people of Germany who helped her a lot to attain the education she has got, she decided to sacrifice everything in Korea including selling her own house to come to Africa, Malawi, Karonga to fulfil this great mission.

The Band

Lusubilo band is one of the brain children of the institution and it is best known by its Afro pop and jazz music, Energetic live performance and the inclusion of wind instruments which is very rare in other bands in Malawi. Composed of highly talented and trained members, Lusubilo band seeks to provide the best music and entertainment to people. This is achieved through the best trainings the band receives from the best musicians/Coaches from Malawi, Germany and South Korea.

The band has since its inception registered many tremendous achievements such as wining 2012 national Chibuku road to fame competition, Voted as the Best band in 2014 MUMA best band of the year. Has performed twice at Lilongwe Jazz festival, performed at 2022 Sand Music festival, performed at 2021 Tumaini festival and performed thrice at Lake of Stars International festival. The Band has so far managed to produce three DVDS, two of them shot live in Malawi and South Korea respectively and a live CD.

Apart from taking part in several local projects, the Band has also been involved in two major international projects i.e.

  1. A German government funded project on cultural exchange which saw the German musical group, the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra working together with Lusubilo band and jointly toured Malawi before touring Germany.
  2. Apart from first touring South Korea courtesy of Prof Agnes Kim, the Band also represented Malawi/Africa in an Art Camp in South Korea, the Pyeong Chang Art dream camp during 2018 Winter Olympic Games which was organized and sponsored by the Korean Ministry of culture.

After successfully making a name on a local scene, the band thirsts to keep its fame and to increase its parameters within Africa and elsewhere.
